You must have few polo shirts in your wardrobe. They are the best summer wear shirts, and the most versatile piece of garment has been in demand from many years. It will never go out of style ever. But do you know why these shirts called as polo shirts? Before we explore different types of work polo shirts let’s look at the origin of polo shirts

History of Polo shirts

The first ever polo shirt was designed by Rene Lacoste for tennis players. He designed a white short sleeved cotton shirt with flat collar and buttoned placket, the back of the shirt was longer than the front and it was used in 1926 US Open Championship. 

He started mass production of these shirts in 1933, after he retired from tennis, and they were sold as tennis shirts.

Haven’t you wondered yet that if the shirts were made for tennis players, then how did it come to be known as polo shirts? 

It was John Brooks, the founder of Brooks brother who noticed that the oxford cotton shirts wore by the polo players had long collars and it always flipped upwards during the play and it was disturbing the players.

Brooks adopted the design of Lacoste’s tennis shirts for the polo players and by 1950’s the tennis players started calling the tennis shirts as polo shirts.

Let us understand the difference between work polo shirts and t-shirts.

  • Work polo shirts are mostly short sleeved made from cotton and t-shirts are simple casual top available in short sleeves long sleeves mid sleeves etc.
  • Work polo shirts have 2 – 3 buttons below the color and t-shirts usually do not have buttons and collar. You can use such polo t-shirts as your formalwear, and you can use the normal t-shirts as casual wear. 
  • Work polo shirts are considering semi-formal, and t-shirts are completely casual wear.
  • The material used for work polo shirts is knitted cloth and the material of t-shirts is weaved cloth. Plus, polo t-shorts are more comfortable to wear, and you can find such t-shirts in different fabrics. 
  • Work polo shirts are available in solid colors, and you can customize these t-shirts with your company logo. These t-shorts are available in solid colors, various designs, patterns, textures, and you can customize these t-shirts with images, slogans or anything printed on them. So, you can advertise your company through these polo t-shirts and give such customized t-shirts to your employees. 

Some major don’ts for work polo shirts

  • Do not tuck your work polo shirt in your trouser as it does not look good. It’s best if you leave it out. If you are wearing a jacket on your polo shirt then you can tuck it from the front of your polo shirt.
  • Do not up the collar of your work polo shirt unless you are teenager. This spoils the entire look of the polo shirt, and it will make your look informal.
  • Do not buy work polo shirts if they are too tight for you or to lose for you. Polo shirts are made from good quality cotton, so they fit perfectly on your body. 

Do not go for work polo shirts with large logo, it’s a big no-no. It is better to opt for no logo shirts or polo shirts with pockets which again has its own draw back because the pockets on the polo shirts are very light, they become shaggy too.
